CPE is the abbreviation of “Chlorinated Polyethylene”, which is chlorinated from high-density polyethylene.

Polyvinyl chloride, more correctly but unusually poly(vinyl chloride), commonly abbreviated PVC, is the third-most widely produced synthetic plastic polymer, after polyethylene and polypropylene.

The product of the polymerization process is unmodified PVC. Before PVC can be made into finished products, it always requires conversion into a compound by the incorporation of additives (but not necessarily all of the following) such as heat stabilizers, UV stabilizers, plasticizers, processing aids, impact modifiers, thermal modifiers, fillers, flame retardants, biocides, blowing agents and smoke suppressors, and, optionally, pigments.

PVC's relatively low cost, biological and chemical resistance and workability have resulted in it being used for a wide variety of applications.

CPE 135A is a high molecular copolymer made from HDPE and chlorine with linear molecular structure, it’s a kind of thermoplastic elastomer. it has a series of excellent performance, like: heatproof, weather-proof, flame-retardancy, chemical-resistance and ozone-resistance, its basic function is to improve the weatherability and impact strength of PVC finished products.

Chlorinated polyethylene resins and elastomers (CPE) exhibit excellent physical and mechanical properties, including resistance to chemicals, oils, heat, abrasion, and weathering; low-temperature performance; compression-set resistance; flame retardancy; high filler acceptance; and tensile strength.

Halogenated polymers, particularly polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and polyvinylidene chloride (PVDE), require the use of heat stabilizers for effective processing.

In the PVC processing industry the use of lubricants is absolutely essential. Lubricants influence the manner in which PVC melts and flows during processing.

CPE and ACR are two essential materials for manufacturing most of rigid PVC (UPVC) products.

As PVC Resin has low heat stability, PVC stabilizer is added into PVC Resin to fix the defect of PVC chains and absorb HCL gas released by decomposition of PVC. Meanwhile PE Wax also needs to be added as lubricant due to high viscosity and big shearing index of PVC Resin.

Chlorine content of CPE ranges from 20% to 42%. The higher chlorine content of CPE, the more excellent flame retardancy, oil resistance and air tightness CPE-PVC blend will have.

In the production of PVC pipe & fitting, 1~5 phr of PVC lubricants are usually added into PVC Resin in order to enhance the lubrication between materials and equipment’s contact face and surface finish of end products and improve the processability and processing speed.

Brief introduction of mechanism of PVC heat stabilizer

Ideal heat stabilizers is thought that it should have functions including absorption of HCL, elimination of active part, addition with conjugated polyene chain, damage to cation carbonate salt and prevention from automatic oxidization, but without outcome which has catalytic action to Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC).

Low polymerized PVC Resin SG-5 type shall be selected for UPVC pipe manufacturing. The higher degree of polymerization, the better physical mechanical property and heat resistance. But PVC Resin SG-5 has relatively low fluidity, thus causing difficulty in processing. Anyway PVC Resin SG-5 with viscosity of（1.7~1.8）×10-3Pa•s is a good choice.

PVC Resin SG-5 is used as raw material for extrusion of UPVC pipe. PVC heat stabilizer, PVC lubricant, filler and pigments are also needed. Abovementioned materials shall be blended in a certain proportion as formula. If single-screw extruder is used for extrusion of UPVC pipe, PVC masterbatch shall be added into the extruder. If double-screw extruder is used for extrusion of UPVC pipe, PVC compound powder can be used directly for extrusion of UPVC pipe.

PVC Stabilizer can be used only for increasing thermal decomposition temperature in processing because PVC Resin is a kind of heat-sensitive material. It means PVC Stabilizer will help extend heat stability time but cannot prevent PVC Resin from thermal decomposition. Therefore, temperature for PVC pipe processing should be strictly controlled.

Stone plastics means “PVC Marble Material”. It mainly includes PVC marble stripe and PVC marble plate.

PVC pipe manufacturers have to consider the changes in ingredients, because sometimes it’s a little bit hard to get expected plasticization due to difference in raw materials even though process index like temperature and screw speed is adjusted.
